Wolves at the Gate
Read Now at Amazon

Alternate WWII America invaded

Lieutenant Jim Fraser was, in turns, eager and terrified. His Baker Company led the American offensive to liberate Charleston, but would his wife, Florrie, and their twin girls trapped behind German lines survive the coming battle?

Wolves at the Gate is an alternative history thriller from Bart Stark imagining another Second World War. Due to a twist of history during his youth, Adolf Hitler turns west and out to sea against England and America in alliance with fascist Japan and Italy. After the British Empire falls, the Axis turn on an outnumbered and unprepared United States. Instead of being waged in a far-off land, total war rages across the Hawaiian Islands and South Carolina, down our streets and into the homes of our families.

Reviews

This is an intriguing novel, with a detailed and well-researched scenario. The specifics of how the Nazis end up in America are very believable. The plot is intricate and well thought out.

[T]he first chapter pulls you bodily into a war rather than allowing you to observe it from a distance. The perspective feels less like narration and more like immersion…Every jolt, every flicker of tracer fire, and every near miss vibrates through the prose, giving the battlefield a visceral, tactile immediacy rather than an abstract quality

-- DK Marley, Historical Fiction Company ★★★★

Wolves at the Gate thrives on tension the kind that creeps in while characters argue strategy behind stone walls and listen for danger beyond them. The looming threat isn't just outside the gates; it's in divided loyalties, hard choices, and the cost of waiting too long to act. Stakes feel personal, not abstract, as survival, power, and conscience collide. Sharp pacing and grounded detail make every decision matter, turning the approach of the wolves into a relentless countdown that refuses to let go.

The novel is told from various point of views: we've got Americans (obviously), but also Germans, Italians and Japanese characters. Bold choice by the author in his debut novel, and it worked out really well. It was a real benefit to the story to experience it from so many viewpoints. I think all of them were distinctive and unique.

I could completely believe this could have happened. The character development was great, the people seemed completely multi-dimensional, not simply some he-man soldier or poor distraught females. The timeline was excellent, and very easily followed. The action was on multiple fronts, and non-stop. The writing was strong enough to actually pull multiple emotions out of me, which isn't easily done.

Reading like diary entries or radio broadcasts of Ernie Pyle, and William L. Shier, this author writes some of the most engaging accounts of the war from a unique perspective, with emotional depth, passionate catharsis and evocative power.

If you ever read Man in the High Castle, this would be the book scenario of what happened before that book. Scary to imagine what might have been.
